Instructional Design
Reflection

For me, instructional design allows educators and specialists to create educational environments that are equitable and accessible to all. As a student with ADHD, autism, and severe dyslexia, I want to become an instructional designer to create educational environments for students like myself who have historically not had the same educational opportunities as traditional students.
I will be addressing the sticking point of "one-size-fits-all learning," as I find this very relevant to my work of designing inclusive and accessible learning environments. I would want to make a focus group consisting of individuals who belong to groups that have been traditionally prevented from being a part of the academic community, like individuals with learning disabilities, and collaborate with them in designing learning environments that do not have the barriers to education that a traditional "one-size-fits-all" learning environment does.
The people I would want on my team to make this project happen would be instructional designers, multimedia specialists, a representative from the disability resource center or a specialist in systematic barriers in education for minority populations, web developers, translators, graphic designers, and a videographer or someone who is an expert in creating videos and editing them.
When considering what stage of the ADDIE model is most interesting or useful in the instructional design work and interventions that I have discussed, I would choose the Analysis stage. The reason for this is that we would have to, in collaboration with the focus group, identify all of the barriers that these different types of individuals face in the traditional education system. It is critical that this foundation is comprehensive and solid before building on it and finding solutions to the problems individuals face.
I want to see that the barriers to education being taken down and that all learners are able to access, understand, and learn the material provided for them. I want everyone to have an equal opportunity to get an education and that the environment is not hindering them in that pursuit. I would explain to the focus group participants that this project is working to help people like them but that we need their help to do that effectively.
