Open Educational Resources

Reflection

In the OER (open educational resource) model we discussed and learned about open educational resources, which are defined as "teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use or re-purposing by others" (Atkins, Brown, & Hammond, 2007, p.4). After completing the course readings, we had to create our own OEP in oercommons.org about a subject of our choice. This was very beneficial as it allowed us the opportunity to apply the information we learned to our own lives and experience how beneficial OERs are.

The OER that I created was about Instructional Design and Accessibility, as this is the field that I intend to specialize in. The short OER course aims to increase educators' awareness of matters relating to accessibility and how educators can remove these barriers to increase access for all to education. This OER topic supports the mission of ensuring equity in education spaces for all learners, which OERs also inherently aim to do. The video that I provided in the OER is a video that I made at the University of Florida and learners are instructed to watch the video to see how we can use instructional design to create an accessible learning environment for all students. After watching the video, learners are tasked with identifying the aspects of course environments created in the online courses demonstrated in the video to increase access to education, for what student populations, and why. Examples of responses would be: including audio options and text-to-speech software as it increases access to education for deaf students and dyslexic students.
