Iceland, the land of fire and ice, is facing a potential eruption once again in the Reykjanes peninsula. There have been three eruptions in Iceland in the past three years, and those eruptions have been what we call tourist eruptions that people all over the world, and most Icelanders, including myself, have gone and seen. The past erruptions have all been small and a safe distance from people, infasturcutres, towns, and the capital.
However, this time is different.
Now, the fissure threatens to swallow the town of Grindavík in the next couple of hours.
In the last 48 hours, there have been 3570 earthquakes in the Reykjanes peninsula, the highest one being 5.2.
Just to put that in perspective, there are 2880 minutes in 48 hours.
However, this is not much different from the other eruptions, with the first eruption in 2021 having over 40,000 earthquakes that occurred in the 3-week period leading up to the eruption on March 19th.
However, the current earthquakes have caused a lot more damage than the earthquakes that occurred before the other three eruptions.
In this eruption will be much bigger than the other three.
Here are photos that have been taken by the people of Grindavík and the effect of the earthquakes.
The entire town of Grindavík has been evacuated as the eruption could happen any minute.
The red line on this photo indicates where the fissure is predicted to open, and scientists are estimating that this will be a very long fissure like we encountered in the 3rd eruption, but instead of being a couple meters long, they are estimating now that the fissure will be up to 15 km long, which is 9.3 miles.
Our thoughts are with the good people of Grindavík.
Reflection
I really enjoyed the process of making this video.
I included 3 types of videos in this short educational storytelling video. The first two video clips that have the IStock watermark on them I got from IStock. Then, I included screen records of my computer recording a video on a governmental news website about the most recent developments in volcanic activity, with the link to the original video and website at the top. All other videos are videos that I have recorded myself.
The process of making this video was a bit strange. Since the earthquakes started happening in Iceland this week, and with growing intensity, there have not been a lot of other thing on my mind. So, I decided to make that the topic of my video even though my original plan was to focus on instructional design and my work with the universities in Iceland.
I want to stress that this is not a made-up story but that this is actually happening now in Iceland, with the volcano actually being predicted to erupt tonight on the 12th of November or tomorrow as the lava is less than 800 meters from the surface. It has also been hard to stay focused with all of the earthquakes, but I'm happy with the end product that I was able to produce.
Besides the current state in Iceland, the process of making the video went smoothly. All of the images I used were found on pexels.com, unsplash.com, or istockphoto.com, or photos from my own phone. Moreover, I only used two short videos from istockphoto.com that can clearly be identified with the IStock watermark. The other videos I included were from my phone that I recorded when I went to see the volcano in 2021.
However, since this is just happening and I'm making this video and writing this in the middle of the event, I did not find images about this news on the royalty-free image websites. The other pictures I used were screenshots or screen records of the news outlet that I found them on with the link present and everything. The vast majority of the content I included that was not completely royalty-free was content that was produced less than 24 hours ago.
For the editing, I used Microsoft Clipchamp and had no trouble using the application, which I was thankful for. Then I uploaded the video to YouTube, but instead of making the video public as the instruction stated, I made it unregistered, which means that people who share the link of the video are the only ones who can access it. I did this because I already have published YouTube videos that are being viewed on my channel, and I don't want this to be accessible to just anyone.
